A Mini-Lesson in World Cultures

Updated March 14, 2018

Yesterday my preschooler and I packed our suitcases and went on a trip…to ancient Persia.  We slept overnight in a hotel, then jumped on a train (yes, a train) and traveled to South America for breakfast!Brown Suitcase Craft with Pretend Passport Closed

Ok, I’ll admit, my daughter’s bedroom doubled as Persia, and the dining room was South America, but we had a great trip nonetheless!  I prepared the suitcase craft the night before, and we assembled it in the morning.

We then “traveled” to her bedroom where I read “Leyla and the Lamp” from the book Stories from Around the World (this past week she’s asked to read this story 4 times – it’s her favorite in the book so far).  We jumped on a train (yes, I know it should have been a plane, boat, or time traveling machine) and went to the dining room!   After some toast and jelly, I read the story “How Birds Got Bright Feathers” (from the same storybook).

Blue Suitcase Craft OpenMy child loves pretending, but I’m not the best at it.  The suitcase craft and storybook gave me something tangible to start with, and it really wasn’t much effort.  (Well, except for creating the printables; but it was worth it.  And now it is already done – I just have to print them out next time!)   M loved making the suitcase and then “packing” it.  She gave me the idea for the inside pockets.  She’s playing with the suitcases again today – a good sign of a successful crafting venture!

If you have older children (5 – 10 years old), you may be interested in a Little Passports subscription – each month your child(ren) will receive a package with activities related to a different country.  For the first month, they receive a suitcase and a wall map!  To read my review, please click here.
