I Can Learn To Pray ~ Children’s Book Review

I Can Learn To Pray Cover

After our monthly photo shoot yesterday, (where my daughter is my model and holds the books I review) I found her reading one of them out loud to her Daddy.  She was particularly interested in being able to read one of the prayers by herself.  Needless to say, this book has just moved to the top of our reading list!

The book my daughter was so interested in was I Can Learn To Pray – a parent-led, 52-week devotional book about talking to God. Written by Holly Hawkins Shivers, this is a wonderful companion book to I Can Learn the Bible: 52 Devotions and Scriptures for Kids.  (See my review of this book here.)  Holly Hawkins Shivers is the daughter of Dr. O.S. Hawkins, author of The Joshua Code: 52 Scripture Verses Every Believer Should Know.  And we love the whimsical illustrations by Becka Moor!

If you have children ages 4 – 8, this book may be a wonderful resource to help you start or continue a family devotional time.

A Weekly Journey

I Can Learn to Pray provides 52 weeks of devotionals, each based on a particular scripture passage and beginning with a prayer. Even the most antsy child should be able to sit (or bounce) through the brief, 4-page reading. The devotionals are interactive, providing prompts to help you talk with your children and engage them in conversation.  Some even encourage role-playing and pretending – two things most kids enjoy!

Now that my daughter is starting to read, she will like taking turns with me as we read through each day’s thoughts.  If you are interested in teaching basic, sound, scriptural truths to your kids through a devotional, I highly recommend this book. I’m looking forward to starting it very soon with my Kindergartner!
