The Early Readers Bible Review

Tommy Nelson Early Readers Bible CoverI was excited to find that one of this month’s resources from Tommy Nelson is a Bible for 7 to 10 year old kids!  Although my daughter is only 5, I’m one of those Moms who love to stash things away to use in the future (like the size 8 clothes in her closet….).

I was also happy to find that this Early Readers Bible is in the New King James Version, the version that has become my favorite in the past few years.  The cover has a cool holographic image appealing to kids in early elementary grades.  Although the paper feels just as thin as in “regular” Bibles, the type is a bit bigger and easier to read – I can see how this would prevent frustration in children trying to read the Bible by themselves.

There are full-color maps with great explanations in everyday language to go along with them, plus other easy-to-read graphs to make the text more understandable.  I also loves the “Time Lines of Biblical and Secular History” in the back – what a great resource for teaching history!

After the Book of Revelation there is an “Illustrated Word List” – helpful for looking up words that are unfamiliar or just need further explanation.  Words that are difficult to explain are given their own illustrations – such as “anoint” and “cubit”.

The Early Readers Bible is the kind of Bible I wish were published when I was a kid…maybe I’ll keep this one and read it myself until my daughter is old enough: I’m sure I will learn a lot!    On second thought, I can read it aloud to her as well; so far we have read out of only Bible storybooks – perhaps this is a good time to introduce the full scripture.  I know the colorful maps will keep her attention, and she’ll definitely love the cover!
