10 Ultimate Truths Girls Should Know

Role Model

As a mother of a very young daughter I am so appreciative of this book, 10 Ultimate Truths Girls Should Know, by Kari Kampakis. Although people tell me “it goes by so fast,” I still have several years before she becomes a teenager.  Years in which I hope to take every opportunity to invest love and truth in my child.

Things changed so much when I became a mom at 41.  I am now responsible for another human being.  It’s often overwhelming, and I’m not sure how I would handle it if I didn’t know that she is in God’s hands, and He loves her even more than I do.  I try to trust Him.  I hope for great things for my daughter.  To know how much God loves her.  To know how much her parents love her.  To know how very valuable and precious she is.  Out of these truths, good behavior – and a good life – can blossom.  But God gently reminds me that everything I pray for her, I need to model.  Do I believe that I am loved (no matter my circumstance), and that I am valuable?  Good behavior can be faked for awhile, but what am I like when I am tired, stressed, and have had a really bad hair day?  Am I still kind, do I persevere, am I (choke) patient?

Compassion and Understanding

These are the thoughts running through my mind while reading 10 Ultimate Truths Girls Should Know.  Thankfully, the author is not condemning, and my thoughts are just gentle nudges in my spirit.  The truths presented in this book are those I’ve learned in my own life…from my Mom, my Dad, teachers, and others that have influenced me.  Having these essentials bound in one volume, and so thoughtfully explained and illustrated is invaluable.  Especially since (judging by the nudges in my spirit) I need the review!

Kari Kampakis writes with understanding for girls who long to be popular and liked.  She conveys compassion for both the victims of “mean girls” of the social elite, and the former mean girls themselves who regret their behavior.  The book is an encouragement to be better, more than an admonishment to act better.  A feat only possible with God, as she points out in Truth #1.  I love how she points to a better, positive way of living, and challenges the reader to reach higher and believe that anything is possible with God.

I would recommend this book to any girl in middle school on up.  Including Moms and Grandmas!  You can read your own copy while your daughter is reading hers – what a wonderful way to come alongside your child and give her guidance and love as she copes with the hurts, fears, joys, and challenges of life.
