My Review
I Can Learn The Bible

Both my daughter and I were immediately drawn to the whimsical illustrations in I Can Learn the Bible – doesn’t the little bear on the cover make you want to see what is inside the book?   Written by Holly Hawkins Shivers (daughter of Dr. O.S. Hawkins, author of The Joshua Code: 52 Scripture Verses Every Believer Should Know), this devotional takes the readers on a 52-week journey of memorizing and understanding scripture.   If you have children ages 4 – 8, this book may be a wonderful resource to help you start or continue a family devotional time.

A Weekly Journey

I Can Learn the Bible provides 52 weeks of devotionals, each beginning with a Bible verse.  Even the most antsy child should be able to sit (or bounce) through the brief, 4-page reading.  The devotionals are interactive, providing prompts to help you talk with your children and engage them in conversation.  Looking through the book I found several readings that I am eager to share with my daughter (although I will start with Week 1)!

Love the Lord your God. Love Him with all your heart, all your soul, all your strength, and all your mind. Also, you must love your neighbor as you love yourself.

~ Luke 10:27

Week 23 captured my attention: it is titled “Your Purpose.”  Don’t we all struggle with that question from time to time throughout our lives?  Even at 46 years old, I still ask it once in awhile.  (I thought I would have it all figured out by now!)  I’ll give you a hint: it has to do with loving God and loving others.  I was very impressed with the author’s answers, and she writes in such a way that young children should be able to understand what she means.  And any misunderstanding is just another opportunity for conversation with your child!

God’s Word is for me and to me, it is in me and working through me, and just like His love, it goes on and on forever!

~ Major theme from I Can Learn the Bible

If you are interested in teaching basic, sound, scriptural truths to your kids through a devotional, I highly recommend this book.  I’m looking forward to starting it this week with my preschooler!
