Review

The Legend of the Three Trees is a wonderful story about three different trees who each have dreams for their futures.  The trees desire significance and importance, and achieve it in much different ways than they first imagine.

Along with the unabridged story, the DVD features beautiful, original songs by Marilyn McCoo and Andy Chrisman.  I found the gentle narration by Hal Holbrook rather soothing, and the story moves along at a nice pace for young children (not too fast, not too slow).

Every child has big dreams for his or her future. But what happens when God doesn’t fulfill our dreams…at least not in the way we expect?

About The Story

The story is a retelling of a classic folktale about following your dreams…and then finding out that your dreams may be too small!  We have had The Legend of the Three Trees from Tommy Nelson in both book and movie form in our library for a few years now, and both my daughter and I have enjoyed them.  I keep our book in our Easter box, and bring it out every year!

Spoiler alert
The first tree wishes to be a treasure chest, but is made into the manger Mary uses for Jesus’ cradle.  Although the second tree desires to sail the seas as a great sailing vessel, it is used to build a common fishing boat (you can probably guess the rest)!  The third tree wants to stay on it’s mountain and point to God, but is made into the cross on which Christ was crucified.

The story – either read from the book or watched on the DVD – is a beautiful way to introduce a child to the concept that God has dreams for his or her life – probably much bigger than they think!  I also enjoyed hearing the story of Jesus from a completely different angle.
