When I first became a Mom, I decided that there would be no TV for the first two years, and very limited after that. I was pretty successful at sticking to this for a little over a year, then reality set in – morning nap time went away! I found I needed something else to occupy her time for a half hour or so in the morning.
As a side note, I’ve noticed another aspect of motherhood – I tend to be less judgmental and less apt to question others’ choices as time goes on. Everyone has a different situation at home with their kids. This post is not meant to be condemning of your choices in any way.
We have Netflix, and I was thrilled to find that they have many educational programs to stream for kids. There are several choices for our (limited) TV time – Sesame Street, Dora, Busy Town, Martha Speaks, Leap Frog, and more. There are also several less-educational choices, and many that are just silly. These we watch only on occasion. Netflix is nice because there are no commercials, so we don’t have to be exposed to commercials for toys and sugary snacks.
This informative graphic from EducationNews.org recommends that instead of turning the TV off altogether, it may be just as beneficial to change the channel!
